Ishigaki Island (石垣島) is the largest island in the Yaeyama Islands group, which is part of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. It is situated approximately 410 kilometers southwest of Okinawa Island, the main island in Okinawa Prefecture.
Ishigaki Island is known for its beautiful beaches, such as Kabira Bay, which is famous for its turquoise waters and glass-bottom boat tours. The island is also a popular destination for snorkeling and diving, as it is surrounded by coral reefs and has clear waters with abundant marine life.
In addition to its natural attractions, Ishigaki Island is known for its local cuisine, such as Yaeyama soba noodles made from locally grown flour and Ishigaki beef, a type of wagyu beef raised on the island. Visitors can also experience local culture, such as traditional Ryukyu dance and music, at various cultural events and festivals held throughout the year.
Ishigaki Island is also a convenient base for exploring the other islands in the Yaeyama Islands group, such as Taketomi Island, Iriomote Island, and Yonaguni Island. Visitors can take high-speed boats from Ishigaki Island to these other islands, which offer their own unique attractions and experiences. Ferries from mainland Okinawa also stop at Ishigaki island.
