Dogo Onsen

Dogo Onsen

Dogo Onsen (道後温泉) is a historic hot spring located in Matsuyama, Japan. It is one of the oldest and most famous hot springs in Japan, with a history that dates back over 3,000 years. The main attraction, Dogo Onsen Honkan, is a beautiful traditional building built in 1894 and known for its unique architecture and design. The building is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is currently undergoing preservation and restoration work, with a full reopening scheduled for July 2024.

Dogo Onsen Honkan has separate bathing areas for men and women and offers a variety of baths, including a large communal bath called “Kami no Yu,” a private bath for smaller groups, and a steam bath. The hot spring water is said to have therapeutic properties and is believed to help with various health conditions, including rheumatism and neuralgia. The Honkan also features a special bathing area called “Yushinden,” reserved for royalty and dignitaries, with a private bath and relaxation room.

The hot spring has been a popular destination for both Japanese and international visitors for centuries and has been featured in various works of art, including the famous Japanese novel “Botchan” by Natsume Soseki. In addition to the Honkan, visitors can enjoy the recently opened Dogo Onsen Annex Asuka no Yu, a modern facility offering a variety of baths and services. The surrounding area of Dogo Onsen boasts numerous shops, restaurants, traditional Japanese inns, and attractions like the Botchan Karakuri Clock, making it a great place to explore and experience Japanese culture.
