Ozu Castle

Ozu Castle

Ozu Castle (大洲城), also known as Jizogatake Castle, is a historic castle located in the city of Ozu in Ehime Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku in Japan. The castle was originally built in the early 14th century by Utsunomiya Toyofusa and served as a strategic stronghold during the Sengoku period (1467-1603). Later, the Kato clan became the lords of the castle.

The castle was destroyed several times during its history. However, four turrets (Daidokoro Turret, Korandoro Turret, Owataya Turret, and Sannomaru South Corner Turret) from the Edo period have survived and are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The current main keep, a four-story wooden structure with a traditional Japanese-style design, was reconstructed in 2004 based on historical records and old drawings. This reconstruction is the first of its kind in Japan and stands at a height of 19.15 meters, making it the tallest wooden castle tower in Japan. Visitors can climb to the top for stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

The castle grounds also feature several other structures and artifacts, including a reconstructed gate, stone walls, and a moat. Visitors can also explore the castle’s history and artifacts at the adjacent Ozu Castle Museum.

In addition to the castle, the city of Ozu offers other attractions and activities, such as hot springs, temples, and cultural experiences. The city is also known for its traditional Japanese architecture and festivals, such as the Ozu Lantern Festival, which takes place in October and features lanterns lit along the castle walls and throughout the city.
