Kamihaga Residence (上芳我邸) is a historic home located in the town of Uchiko in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. Built in the late 19th century during the Meiji period, it is one of the best-preserved examples of a traditional Japanese merchant’s residence and is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
The Kamihaga family were successful merchants who made their fortune through the production and sale of wax. The residence features a large entrance hall, 12 spacious rooms, and a courtyard garden. The interior is decorated with intricate carvings and traditional Japanese art, and many of the original furnishings, household items, and wax products are still on display.
One unique feature of the Kamihaga Residence is its use of natural ventilation and lighting. The home was designed to maximize the flow of air and light through various architectural features, such as a large open-air space and skylights, which helped to regulate the temperature and create a comfortable living environment.
Located in the Yokaichi Gokoku area of Uchiko, a district designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, Kamihaga Residence is a popular tourist attraction that offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of wealthy merchants during the Meiji period and the traditional techniques of wax production.
