Tenshaen Garden

Tenshaen Garden

Tenshaen Garden (天赦園) is a traditional Japanese garden located in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. It was originally built in 1866 by Date Munetada, the 7th feudal lord of the Uwajima Domain, as a retirement villa and strolling garden (kaiyu-shiki) for the Date clan, a powerful samurai family.

Visitors can stroll around the garden and enjoy its various features, including a large pond called Horai-ike, a waterfall, and several rock formations. The garden’s design incorporates elements of the surrounding landscape, including views of the mountains and the Uwajima Castle. One of the highlights is the Harusametei teahouse, where visitors can enjoy traditional Japanese tea and sweets while taking in the peaceful surroundings.

The garden was damaged during World War II but underwent a major restoration in the late 20th century. Today, it is considered one of the finest examples of Japanese garden design in the country and is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

Tenshaen Garden is a popular attraction in Uwajima City, offering visitors a tranquil escape and a glimpse into the aesthetics and culture of the Edo period. It is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom season in the spring and the autumn foliage season in the fall.
