Kotohira

Kotohira (琴平) is a district in Kotohira-cho, Nakatado-gun, Kagawa Prefecture. The town has long flourished as the gate town of Konpira Shrine and continues to be visited by many tourists. Kotohira has a long history, and even before the construction of Konpira Shrine, it was a place of worship for the deity Daimono-no-Mikoto, which is believed to have attracted people’s faith.

During the Edo period (1603-1867), the number of visitors to Konpira Shrine exceeded one million a year, and the town of Kotohira was very prosperous. After the Meiji Period, Kotohira continued to develop as a tourist destination, with the Kotohira Electric Railway opening in 1898, and the Konpira Onsen (hot springs) springing up in 1967.
