Konpirasan

Kotohiragu

Konpirasan (金刀比羅山), also known as Kotohira-gu (金刀比羅宮), is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Kotohira in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to the deity Omononushi, the god of the sea and mountains, as well as Emperor Sutoku.

The main attraction of Konpirasan is its large complex of buildings, including the main shrine, several smaller shrines, and a number of gates and bridges. Visitors can explore the complex and admire the intricate architecture and decoration, which includes beautiful carvings, paintings, and lanterns. The shrine also houses a museum containing valuable art and artifacts.

One of the most famous features of Konpirasan is the long staircase leading up to the main shrine. The staircase, known as the “Stone Steps of Success,” has 785 steps and is believed to bring good luck and success to those who climb it. The climb is quite steep, but visitors are rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding area from the top. For those who wish to continue, there are an additional 1368 steps leading to the Okusha, the shrine’s inner sanctuary.

Another popular attraction at Konpirasan is the nearby Kanamaruza Kabuki Theater (旧金毘羅大芝居), officially known as the Former Konpira Grand Theater, and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It is one of the oldest surviving Kabuki theaters in Japan. Visitors can watch traditional Kabuki performances during the annual Konpira Kabuki Oshibai in April and learn about the history and culture of this ancient art form.

Additionally, visitors can enjoy the unique “Konpira Dog Fortune,” a cute dog-shaped omikuji (fortune paper) available at the shrine.
