Marugame

Marugame (丸亀) is a city located in Kagawa Prefecture, on the island of Shikoku, Japan. It is known for its historical landmarks, traditional crafts, and delicious Sanuki udon noodles.

One of the most famous attractions in Marugame is Marugame Castle, a historical landmark that dates back to the late 16th century. The castle is one of only 12 castles in Japan to retain its original wooden main keep. The castle features a museum with exhibits on the history of the castle and the city, and offers panoramic views of the surrounding area from the top of its impressive stone walls, considered to be the tallest in Japan.

Marugame is also known for its traditional crafts, such as Marugame uchiwa (round fans) and bamboo crafts. Visitors can visit workshops and studios to see the craftsmen at work and purchase handmade items.

Another popular attraction in Marugame is the Tsuruoka Hachimangu Shrine, a local shrine located near Marugame Castle. The shrine is known for its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere.

In addition to its historical landmarks and traditional crafts, Marugame is famous for its Sanuki Udon noodles, a type of thick wheat noodle that is a local specialty of Kagawa Prefecture. The city has numerous Udon restaurants, some of which have been in business for generations, and is known for having some of the best Sanuki Udon in Japan. Visitors can enjoy various types of Udon dishes, from simple Kake Udon with broth and toppings to more elaborate creations.

Marugame also has a vibrant cultural scene, hosting various events and festivals throughout the year, such as the Marugame Uchiwa Festival and the Marugame Castle Festival.
