Ibukijima Island

Ibukijima Island

Ibukijima (伊吹島) is a small island located off the west coast of Kagawa Prefecture in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. With a population of around 30 people as of 2023, the island is primarily known for its traditional fishing culture and the production of dried sardines (イリコ), a key ingredient in Japanese cuisine.

Visitors to Ibukijima can take a ferry from Kan’onji Port, which takes approximately 45 minutes. Upon arrival, they can stroll through the island’s old town, where narrow streets wind between traditional wooden and stone houses, some dating back to the Edo period (1603-1868). These well-preserved structures offer a glimpse into the island’s past and its unique architectural style.

The island’s natural beauty is also a draw, with its rugged coastline, small sandy beaches, and clear waters. Hikers can enjoy trails that offer scenic views of the surrounding sea and islands. While not a major tourist destination, Ibukijima provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, allowing visitors to experience the tranquility of island life and observe the daily routines of the local fishermen.

One of the most notable features of Ibukijima is the island’s lighthouse, which stands tall on a hill and offers panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a breathtaking vista of the surrounding islands and seascape.

Although Ibukijima doesn’t offer a wide range of tourist facilities or activities, it provides a unique opportunity to experience a traditional Japanese fishing community and appreciate the island’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
