Naoshima

Naoshima (直島) is a small island located in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, in Kagawa Prefecture. It’s renowned for its contemporary art museums, installations, beautiful beaches, and scenic views.

One of the main attractions is the Benesse Art Site, which includes the Benesse House Museum, an outdoor sculpture park, and various installations across the island. The museum showcases works by Japanese and international artists. Notable outdoor artworks include Yayoi Kusama’s iconic “Pumpkin” (yellow) and “Red Pumpkin” sculptures, located near Benesse House.

The Chichu Art Museum, designed by architect Tadao Ando, is another highlight. Built mostly underground to preserve the island’s natural beauty, it houses works by Claude Monet, Walter De Maria, and James Turrell, utilizing natural light in its minimalist spaces.

The Art House Project is a unique initiative where abandoned houses in traditional villages have been transformed into art spaces, blending contemporary art with local history and architecture.The Lee Ufan Museum, dedicated to the Korean artist, is also a significant part of Naoshima’s art scene.Naoshima offers beautiful beaches like Miyanoura Beach and Tsutsujiso Beach, perfect for swimming and relaxation.

Accommodation options range from traditional Japanese guesthouses to the Benesse House, which uniquely combines a museum and hotel. Local cuisine, including fresh seafood and udon noodles, is available at various restaurants on the island.Transportation on Naoshima includes buses and rental bicycles, making it easy to explore the island’s attractions.

Ferry Access

Naoshima has two main ports: Miyanoura Port and Honmura Port.

To Miyanoura Port

From Takamatsu Port:

    • Ferry: About 50 minutes, 520 yen
    • High-speed boat: About 30 minutes, 1,220 yen

    From Uno Port:

      • Ferry: About 20 minutes, 300 yen
      • High-speed boat: About 15 minutes, 300 yen

      To Honmura Port

      From Uno Port:

      • Passenger boat: About 20 minutes, 300 yen

      Access from Major Cities

      From Tokyo

      1. Take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Okayama Station
      2. Take the JR Uno Line from Okayama Station to Uno Station
      3. Take a ferry from Uno Port to Naoshima

      Total travel time: About 4.5 to 5 hours

      From Osaka or Kyoto

      1. Take the Shinkansen from Osaka or Kyoto Station to Okayama Station
      2. Take the JR Uno Line from Okayama Station to Uno Station
      3. Take a ferry from Uno Port to Naoshima

      Total travel time: About 2.5 to 3 hours from Osaka, 3 to 3.5 hours from Kyoto

      Getting Around the Island

      • Bus: Runs from Miyanoura Port to Honmura (about 10 minutes, 100 yen) and Benesse House (about 15 minutes, 100 yen)
      • Bicycle rental: Available at Miyanoura Port (from 500 yen per day, electric bicycles from 1,200 yen)

      Note: JR Passes can be used for train travel but not for ferry fares. It’s recommended to make reservations in advance during peak seasons.
