Shodoshima

Shodoshima

Shodoshima (小豆島) is an island located in Kagawa Prefecture, known for its natural beauty, traditional soy sauce production, and olive cultivation.

One of the most popular attractions on Shodoshima is the Kankakei Gorge (寒霞渓), a scenic ravine with hiking trails and stunning views of the surrounding mountains and sea from the ropeway. Its unique rock formations are also a popular sight. Visitors can also enjoy the island’s beautiful beaches, such as Sakate Port Beach and Senmaida Beach. Angel Road (エンジェルロード), a sandbar that appears only during low tide, is a popular spot for couples.

Shodoshima is also famous for its soy sauce production, which has been a traditional industry on the island for centuries. Visitors can tour soy sauce factories and sample different varieties of soy sauce, as well as other soy sauce-based products.

Another unique industry on Shodoshima is olive cultivation, which began in the early 1900s. The island’s warm climate and fertile soil make it an ideal location for growing olives, and visitors can tour olive groves and taste locally produced olive oil. Shodoshima is often referred to as the “Olive Island of Japan.”

In addition to its natural beauty and traditional industries, Shodoshima is also known for its delicious cuisine, which includes fresh seafood, hand-stretched somen noodles, and local vegetables such as eggplant and bamboo shoots. Visitors can also experience the nostalgic atmosphere of early Showa-era Japan at the Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Village, a theme park based on the famous film.
