Megijima (女木島), also known as Onigashima (鬼ヶ島) due to its association with the Japanese folk tale “Momotaro,” is a small island located in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan, about 20 minutes by ferry from Takamatsu Port in Kagawa Prefecture. The island is known for its scenic beauty, traditional architecture, and artistic culture.
One of the most famous attractions on Megijima is the Onigashima Cave (鬼ヶ島大洞窟), a large natural cave said to have been the inspiration for the demons’ dwelling in the famous Japanese folk tale “Momotaro.” Visitors can explore the cave, which features interesting rock formations and a mysterious atmosphere, and learn about its history and folklore.
The island is also home to several traditional Japanese houses, some of which have been converted into art galleries and studios. Visitors can explore these houses and see the work of local and international artists, particularly during the Setouchi Triennale art festival.
Another popular attraction on Megijima is the Angel Road (エンジェルロード), a natural sandbar that appears only at low tide, connecting Megijima to another small island. It is said to bring good luck to couples who walk across it hand in hand.
Megijima is a charming and tranquil destination that offers visitors a unique blend of art, nature, folklore, and cultural experiences. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in exploring the islands of the Seto Inland Sea and delving into Japanese mythology.
