Shikoku Mura

Shikoku Mura

Shikoku Mura (四国村) is an open-air museum located on Yashima in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. The museum features a collection of traditional buildings and artifacts from the Shikoku region, showcasing the history and culture of the area.

Visitors to Shikoku Mura can explore 33 historic buildings, including farmhouses, temples, a traditional sugar mill, a kabuki stage, and a soy sauce brewery, that have been carefully relocated and restored on the museum grounds. Many of these buildings date back to the Edo period (1603-1867) and Taisho era (1912-1926), offering a glimpse into the daily life and customs of the people of Shikoku during those times.

In addition to the buildings, the museum also features a collection of traditional crafts and tools, including pottery, weaving looms, and woodworking tools. Visitors can watch demonstrations of these crafts and even participate in workshops to try their hand at creating their own traditional Shikoku crafts. The Shikoku Mura Gallery, designed by architect Tadao Ando, houses a collection of paintings, sculptures, and other artworks.

Throughout the year, Shikoku Mura hosts various events and festivals, such as the Shikoku Mura Autumn Festival, which features traditional Japanese performances, food stalls, and other activities. Visitors can also enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine and sweets at the museum’s cafe.
