Takamatsu Castle (高松城), also known as Tamamo Castle (玉藻城), is located in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, in the Shikoku region of Japan. Construction of the castle began in 1588 during the Azuchi-Momoyama period by the feudal lord Ikoma Chikamasa, and was completed in 1590. Today, only some remains and partially reconstructed buildings remain as a testament to its history.
Takamatsu Castle is known for its unique location facing the sea, which earned it the nickname “castle of seaweed” (玉藻城, Tamamo-jo). This location was strategically advantageous during the Warring States period and the castle’s design incorporated innovative features to defend against attacks from the sea, such as seawater moats. The castle grounds were divided into sections like Honmaru (the inner citadel), Ninomaru (the second bailey), and Sanomaru (the third bailey), each with structures designed for strategic defense.
Although the castle’s main keep was dismantled in 1884 during the Meiji era, other structures such as the Tsukimi Yagura (Moon Viewing Turret), Hiunkaku (a building with connections to the Imperial family), and several gates still remain.
Today, Takamatsu Castle is a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of the city. Visitors can explore the castle ruins, including the partially reconstructed buildings, stroll through the picturesque Hiunkaku Garden, and enjoy panoramic views of Takamatsu city and the Seto Inland Sea from the castle grounds. The castle also houses the Takamatsu Castle History Museum, where visitors can learn about the castle’s history and view related exhibits.
