Tokushima Prefecture (徳島県) is a prefecture located in the eastern part of the island of Shikoku, one of the four main islands of Japan. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Seto Inland Sea to the north, connected by the Naruto Strait. The capital city is Tokushima.
Tokushima is known for its traditional arts and culture, particularly its unique style of dance called Awa Odori. Awa Odori is a lively dance performed by groups of dancers during the annual Awa Odori festival, held in August, attracting thousands of participants and spectators from all over Japan.
Other famous landmarks in Tokushima include the Naruto whirlpools, which are created by the tidal currents in the Naruto Strait between Shikoku and Awaji Island. The Iya Valley, a remote and rugged valley known for its stunning natural scenery and traditional thatched-roof houses, is another popular destination. The prefecture also boasts the Otsuka Museum of Art, home to a vast collection of ceramic reproductions of famous artworks.
Tokushima is also known for its delicious cuisine. Sudachi, a type of citrus fruit unique to Tokushima, is characterized by its distinct aroma and acidity and is often used as a seasoning in dishes like grilled fish and hot pots. Another local specialty is Sanuki udon, a type of thick and chewy wheat noodle. Additionally, Awaodori chicken, a local brand known for its firm texture and rich flavor, is a must-try for food enthusiasts.
