Mount Tsurugi (剣山) is a mountain located in the central part of the island of Shikoku, Japan, with an elevation of 1,955 meters (6,414 feet). It is the second-highest mountain on Shikoku, after Mount Ishizuchi, and is one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains.
The name “Tsurugi” means “sword” in Japanese, and the mountain is known for its sharp, rocky peak that resembles a sword. The mountain is also known for its stunning views, with vistas of the surrounding valleys and the Pacific Ocean visible from its summit.
Hiking to the summit of Mount Tsurugi is a popular activity among outdoor enthusiasts. There are several hiking trails that lead to the summit, ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging. The most popular trail is the Tsurugi-sen, which starts from the Tsurugi-sancho Station and takes about six hours to reach the summit. Visitors can also take the Tsurugi-san Ropeway to the Tsurugisan Station, which significantly reduces the hiking time.
Along the hiking trails, visitors can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the mountain, including lush forests, waterfalls, and alpine meadows. In the summer months, the mountain is covered in a carpet of wildflowers, adding to its beauty. At the summit, visitors can visit the Kenzan Homangu Hozoishi Shrine and take in the panoramic views. Mountain huts are available for those who wish to stay overnight. During the winter months, Mount Tsurugi becomes a destination for experienced mountaineers seeking a challenging winter climb.
