Cape Oma

Cape Oma

Cape Oma (大間崎) is a scenic and rugged peninsula located in Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan. It is the northernmost point of the Shimokita Peninsula and is known for its stunning natural beauty, unique geological features, and rich marine ecosystem.

The cape is home to several hiking trails and observation points that offer panoramic views of the surrounding sea and coastline. Visitors can also explore the rocky beaches and tide pools, which are home to a variety of marine life, such as crabs, sea urchins, and starfish. Oma Cape Lighthouse, marking the northernmost point of Honshu (the main island of Japan), stands as a prominent landmark and offers a view of Hokkaido across the strait.

One of the most famous attractions at Cape Oma is the Oma Tuna Auction, which takes place daily at the Oma Fishing Port. Oma is renowned for its high-quality bluefin tuna, which is highly prized in Japan and around the world. Visitors can watch the tuna being auctioned off to buyers and witness the excitement of this important local industry. Visitors can also savor various dishes featuring fresh tuna at restaurants and markets in the area.

Cape Oma is also known for its harsh winter climate, with heavy snowfall and strong winds. Despite the challenging weather, the cape is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, who come to hike, ski, and snowshoe in the winter months. During summer, visitors can enjoy marine activities such as sea kayaking and fishing.
