It is renowned for its unique and diverse ecosystems and untouched natural landscapes.
The area is home to the largest remaining virgin beech forest in Japan, covering an area of approximately 17,000 hectares. Some of these beech trees are estimated to be over 400 years old. The forest is also home to various animal species, including the Asiatic black bear and the Japanese macaque.
Visitors to Shirakami Sanchi can explore the area through numerous hiking trails that offer stunning views of the forest and surrounding mountains. The region also boasts several scenic waterfalls and streams, such as Anmon Falls and the Juniko Twelve Lakes, including the famous Aoike Blue Pond, which are popular destinations for tourists.
In addition to its natural beauty, Shirakami Sanchi is known for its rich cultural heritage. The region has a long history of traditional farming and forestry practices, which visitors can learn about by visiting local villages and museums.
