Oyakuen Garden (御薬園), also known as Oyakuen Medicinal Herb Garden, is a traditional Japanese garden located in the city of Koriyama, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. The garden is renowned for its beautiful scenery and its vast collection of medicinal herbs and plants.
The garden was established in 1615 by the feudal lord Gamo Ujisato as a medicinal herb garden. It covers an area of approximately 3.6 hectares and features various traditional Japanese garden elements, including a pond, a waterfall, and a tea house, which was formerly used as the Fukushima Prefectural Guesthouse.
One of the unique features of Oyakuen Garden is its collection of over 400 medicinal herbs and plants. The garden is divided into several sections, each featuring different types of medicinal plants. Visitors can explore the garden and learn about the various herbs and plants, their medicinal properties, and their use in traditional Japanese medicine.
In addition to its collection of medicinal plants, Oyakuen Garden also boasts a variety of seasonal flowers and trees, including cherry blossoms in the spring and vibrant foliage in the fall. The garden is particularly stunning in autumn when the maple trees turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow.
Visitors to Oyakuen Garden can also enjoy a cup of tea and traditional Japanese sweets in the garden’s tea house, which offers a beautiful view of the garden and the surrounding mountains, providing visitors with an authentic Japanese garden experience.
