Ouchi Juku

Ouchijuku (大内宿) is a small village nestled in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. It is a popular tourist destination that offers visitors a glimpse into Japan’s rich history and traditional way of life.

Ouchijuku is renowned for its well-preserved Edo-period architecture, featuring thatched-roof houses and narrow streets paved with stone. Visitors can leisurely explore the village on foot and witness how life was lived in Japan during the Edo period.

One of the most popular attractions in Ouchijuku is the Ouchijuku Town Exhibition Hall (大内宿町並み展示館), which houses exhibits on the history and culture of the village. Visitors can learn about the town’s history as a post town and see artifacts from the Edo period.

Ouchijuku is also famous for its local cuisine, particularly its hand-made soba noodles made from locally sourced buckwheat. The village is home to several restaurants that serve these delicious soba noodles, prepared using traditional methods.

By Train and Bus

  1. From Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, take the Aizu Railway to Yunokami-Onsen Station (about 35 minutes, 1,050 yen)
  2. From Yunokami-Onsen Station, take the “Saruyu” bus to Ouchijuku (about 20 minutes, 1,100 yen for a 2-day pass)
  • Buses run about once an hour from mid-March to November

By Train and Taxi

  1. From Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, take the Aizu Railway to Yunokami-Onsen Station (about 35 minutes)
  2. Take a taxi from Yunokami-Onsen Station to Ouchijuku (about 15 minutes, around 2,000 yen)

By Car

  • About 55 minutes from Aizu-Wakamatsu via national roads

Access from Tokyo

  1. Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Koriyama Station
  2. From Koriyama Station, take the Ban-etsu West Line to Aizu-Wakamatsu Station
  3. From Aizu-Wakamatsu Station, use one of the above methods to reach Ouchijuku
  • Total journey time is about 3 hours 30 minutes, costing around 10,850 yen
