Geibikei Gorge

Geibikei Gorge

Geibikei Gorge (猊鼻渓), a scenic natural gorge located in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, stretches for approximately two kilometers. The gorge is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, with steep cliffs towering up to 100 meters high on either side.

One of the main attractions of Geibikei Gorge is the Satetsu River that flows through it. Visitors can embark on a relaxing 90-minute boat ride down the river, expertly guided by a boatman using a long pole. As the boat glides along the water, passengers can immerse themselves in the stunning scenery, which includes waterfalls, towering cliffs, and lush greenery. During winter, the boat ride becomes even more special as the boats are equipped with kotatsu (heated tables) for warmth. The boatmen also entertain passengers with traditional songs called “Sendo Uta.”

Another highlight of the gorge is the Geibikei Shrine, situated at the entrance. This shrine, dedicated to the god of water, was established in 1680 during the early Edo period. As you journey through the gorge, you can try your luck at throwing “Undama” (lucky stones) into a hollow in the rock wall. Legend has it that your wishes will come true if your Undama successfully lands inside. Additionally, the gorge boasts a unique rock formation called “Shishi-ga-hana” (Lion’s Nose), named for its resemblance to a lion’s nose.

Geibikei Gorge is a popular tourist destination, particularly during the autumn months when the trees adorning the gorge transform into a breathtaking display of fall foliage.
