Goishi Coast

Goishi Coast (碁石浜), located in Ofunato City, Iwate Prefecture, is a stunning coastline known for its scattered rocks resembling Goishi (Go pieces), hence its name. Stretching approximately 3 kilometers, this expansive coastal area offers ample opportunities for leisurely walks amidst the beauty of nature.

The shoreline of Goishi Beach is adorned with a variety of peculiarly shaped rocks, ranging in size and form. From large rocks with gaping holes to those sculpted by the relentless waves into curious shapes, these formations never fail to impress visitors. Moreover, the gentle sea breeze that wafts through the rocks enhances the pleasure of strolling along the coast.

Goishi Coast is renowned for its breathtaking sunset views. As dusk falls, the sun sinking into the sea casts a mesmerizing orange glow along the horizon, captivating the hearts of those who witness it.

Getting there

By Train and Bus

  1. Take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Ichinoseki Station (about 2 hours 10 minutes)
  2. From Ichinoseki Station, take the JR Ofunato Line to Kesennuma Station (about 1 hour 10 minutes)
  3. From Kesennuma Station, take a JR Bus to Hosoura Station (about 1 hour)
  4. From Hosoura Station, take the Iwate Kenpoku Bus (Goishi Line) to “Goishi Kaigan” bus stop (about 15 minutes)
  • Note that bus services are infrequent
  • Total journey time: About 4 hours 30 minutes
  • Fare: 1,750 yen from Ichinoseki Station to Hosoura Station (JR Pass can be used)
