Matsushima (松島) is a group of islands located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, that is famous for its picturesque scenery and natural beauty. It is located near the city of Sendai and is one of the three most scenic spots in Japan, alongside Miyajima and Amanohashidate.
The Matsushima Bay area is known for its 260+ small islands covered in pine trees, which can be viewed from various vantage points around the bay. Visitors can take a boat tour around the islands or hike to one of the viewpoints to enjoy the stunning views. One of the most popular viewpoints is Godaido, a Buddhist temple hall on a small island, part of the Zuiganji Temple complex, which offers panoramic views of the bay and surrounding islands.
Matsushima is also home to several historic temples and shrines, including the Zuiganji Temple, which was founded in 828 and is known for its ornate architecture and beautiful gardens. The Entsuin Temple, located a short distance away from the bay, is also a popular destination for its tranquil gardens and unique tea house.
In addition to its natural and cultural attractions, Matsushima is also known for its local cuisine, including fresh seafood and oysters. Visitors can enjoy a variety of seafood dishes at local restaurants and markets, such as oysters grilled over charcoal or served raw with soy sauce and lemon juice.
