Matsushima Bay

Matsushima Bay (松島) is a picturesque bay located on the Pacific coast of Japan, in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. The bay is famous for its scenic beauty, and is one of the Three Views of Japan, a traditional list of Japan’s most celebrated scenic sights.

Matsushima Bay is dotted with over 260 small islands, which are covered in pine trees and surrounded by crystal-clear water. Visitors can explore the islands by boat, and enjoy the stunning views of the bay and its surrounding scenery.

One of the most famous islands in Matsushima Bay is Fukuura Island, which is entirely considered a sacred site. The island features a vermillion bridge and a Benten-do hall, creating a beautiful landscape integrated with nature.

Another popular attraction in Matsushima Bay is Zuigan-ji Temple, a Rinzai Zen temple of the Myoshin-ji school, located on a hill overlooking the bay. The temple is known for its beautiful Momoyama-style architecture and the main hall is designated as a National Treasure.

Visitors to Matsushima Bay can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, kayaking, and fishing. The area is particularly beautiful in the spring, fall, and winter, when the cherry blossoms, fall foliage, and snow create stunning scenery.

Getting there

By Train from Sendai

Take the JR Senseki Line from Sendai Station to Matsushima-Kaigan Station

    • Travel time: About 40 minutes
    • Cost: 420 yen

    Alternatively, take the JR Tohoku Line from Sendai Station to Matsushima Station

      • Travel time: About 25 minutes
      • Cost: 410 yen
      • Note: Matsushima Station is about a 15-20 minute walk from the waterfront area

      1. Take the JR Senseki Line from Sendai Station to Hon-Shiogama Station (20-30 minutes, 330 yen)
      2. Board a sightseeing cruise from Shiogama to Matsushima
