Aoba Castle (青葉城), also known as Sendai Castle (仙台城), is a historical castle located in the city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Construction of the castle began in 1600 and was completed in 1601 by the feudal lord Date Masamune, who ruled the Sendai Domain during the Edo period.
The castle was built on a hill overlooking the city of Sendai, and served as the administrative and military center of the Sendai Domain. It was also an important cultural center, with a number of temples, shrines, and gardens located within its grounds.
The castle was damaged several times over the centuries, including during the Boshin War in the late 19th century and the bombing of Sendai during World War II. The original main keep was lost during these events, but many of the castle’s other structures, including gates and walls, have been restored or reconstructed over the years. In the place where the keep once stood, there is now a museum called Honmaru Kaikan, featuring exhibits on the history and culture of the Sendai Domain.
Today, visitors to Aoba Castle can explore the castle grounds and see many of the castle’s remaining structures. There is also a museum on the castle grounds that features exhibits on the history and culture of the Sendai Domain.
Aoba Castle is a popular tourist destination in Sendai, and is particularly beautiful in the spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom.
