Dewa Sanzan (出羽三山), or the “Three Mountains of Dewa,” is a group of three sacred mountains located in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. The mountains are considered to be one of the most important spiritual sites in Japan and have been revered for centuries by Shinto and Buddhist pilgrims. The three mountains represent the past, present, and future.
The three mountains that make up Dewa Sanzan are Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan, and Mount Yudono. Each mountain has its own unique character and significance.
Mount Haguro, known for its beautiful cedar forest and ancient temples, is the most accessible of the three mountains. The mountain is home to the Haguro Shinto Shrine, a place of worship steeped in history and considered one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
Mount Gassan, the highest of the three mountains, is known for its snow-capped peaks that remain even during the summer months, making it a popular destination for summer skiing.
Mount Yudono, the most sacred of the three mountains, is accessible only by foot via a steep and rugged trail. At the summit, there is no shrine building, but the entire mountain is considered a sacred entity. Visitors are forbidden from speaking about or photographing the sacred site. Notably, hot springs emerge on Mount Yudono.
